In 2010 I started contributing to the wonderful broadcasts of “Solta a Franga” at De Concertzender, mixing contemporary dancefloor music produced and rooted all over planet earth, without boundaries in style and origin. Some themed broadcasts are displaying the rise of amazing intercultural connections and interpretations within subgenres. Other mixes are a bouquet of groundbreaking bands and producers with a variation of cultural backgrounds. Music that deserves to be heard.
The Cloudcasts of these shows are well-received via channels like Mixcloud, a great platform for discovering wonderful musicians and interact. I interweave my own tracks and remixes exclusively in the mix. That’s how the alias “Rafranga” was born. I was asked to some DJ Sets at big and small festivals, even in France and Belgium. Easily adaptable to origins and wishes, I supported some unique concerts by musicians like Big Youth, Mdungu, Orkestar Braka Kadrievi and UB40 at celebrations, clubnights and intercultural weddings.
Every broadcast contains around 25 tracks mixed down to merely one hour, spiced up with own samples, loops, beats and fx. All shows from three earlier seasons broadcasted at De Concertzender are available for listening in the mix-archive. You can tune in at Solta a Franga via the sidebar on this blog.
Some Rafranga highlights in rotation:
Rafranga | Sitar Edition
Used throughout the Indian subcontinent, particularly in Northern India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, the sitar (Hindi: सितार, Bengali: সেতার, Urdu: ستار, Persian: سیتار ) became known in the western world through the work of Pandit Ravi Shankar in the late 1950s. The Sitar is ubiquitous since the Middle Ages and still played and sampled in contemporary genres. Like within the realms of Funk: on account of artists like The Bamboos, Sohail Rana, Morcheeba, Dust Galaxy (Rob Garza), Sansura, Fort Knox Five, Thievery Corporation, Bob Sinclair, Mukta, Bebo Best and a dozen of others who integrated this instrument in a spot on way. Right here in this special Solta a Franga edition for you to enjoy.
